Career Storytelling Workbook

Your experience is valuable — the problem is how you're describing it. This workbook shows you exactly how to turn vague duties into sharp, quantified stories that make recruiters stop scrolling.

Why storytelling beats duty-listing

Recruiters don't care what you were responsible for — they care what happened because of you. Every bullet should answer: “So what? Why does this matter?” If yours can't answer that, use the STAR method below to rebuild it.

The STAR Framework

Use this to deconstruct any work experience before you write about it. Answer each prompt for one project or achievement, then compress it into one powerful bullet.

SSituation

What was the context or challenge you were facing?

Example:

"Our onboarding drop-off rate was 42% — new users were leaving before completing setup."

TTask

What were you specifically responsible for solving?

Example:

"I owned the end-to-end redesign of the onboarding flow as the sole product designer."

AAction

What concrete steps did YOU take? Use "I" not "we".

Example:

"I ran 12 user interviews, identified 3 friction points, redesigned 5 screens, and A/B tested two variants over 4 weeks."

RResult

What measurable outcome happened because of your actions?

Example:

"Drop-off fell from 42% to 19% — a 55% improvement — driving $120k in recovered annual revenue."

Quantification cheat sheet

Can't find a number? Ask yourself these questions until you find one. Even approximate numbers (15–20 customers, ~40% reduction) are better than none.

How many?

customers, users, tickets, orders, team members, campaigns

How much faster?

time saved in hours/days/weeks, % reduction in turnaround

How much cheaper?

$ or % cost reduction, budget managed, savings generated

How much more?

% growth, revenue increase, conversion improvement

What scale?

geography, user base size, market share, geographic regions

What rank?

out of how many, top X%, award or recognition
